The Centre of Excellence in Accounting and Reporting for Co-operatives was created based on the understanding that the co-operative business model, with its unique business purpose, values and principles is not adequately served by the same approach to accounting used by investor driven firms. CEARC grew out of the needs of the Master of Management - Co-operatives and Credit Unions program at Saint Mary's for research and curriculum materials suitable for educating co-operative managers.
Vision
To be the leader in Canada, with a respected global voice, in the development and interpretation of accounting policies and standards which recognize the distinct cooperative and credit union form of business and contribute to excellent co-operative business practice.
Mission
The mission of CEARC is to be a focal point for policy development, academic and applied research, and critical reflection on industry practices in the area of accounting for cooperatives and credit unions. Working closely with the co-operative business, accounting and academic communities CEARC will develop innovative research programs with practical applications in the areas of policy development and educational programming, recognizing the unique and important roles cooperatives and credit unions play in our society and economy. CEARC will operate in a consultative fashion with accounting standard setters and cooperatives and credit unions to develop best practices and relevant interpretation of standards to improve accounting practice; auditor knowledge and effectiveness; and, government policy.
